On Monday, October 8, Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse will be open from 1 to 5 p.m.  It will be the final public open house of the 2018 season. You can click here to read about all the the details and rules for the open houses.

All donations collected at the October 8 open house will benefit Friends of Flying Santa, helping to keep alive the aerial visits to lighthouses and lifesaving stations that have been a New England tradition since 1929.

Today, the annual Christmastime helicopter flights are a gesture of gratitude to the men, women, and families of the United States Coast Guard who keep watch over our coastal waters. Thousands of hours are volunteered each year to ensure the success of the flights, which now encompass more than 30 stops and 61 Coast Guard units from Maine to New York.

We will have two very special guests at the October 8 open house. One will be the Jolly Old Elf himself, Santa Claus. Bring the kids and have photos taken with Santa at the lighthouse!

Also on hand will be the only official lighthouse keeper in the United States today, Sally Snowman. Sally is keeper at Boston Light, America’s oldest light station, which celebrated its 300th anniversary two years ago. On April 29, 2018, the American Lighthouse Foundation presented Sally with a prestigious Keeper of the Light award during the organization’s annual gala at the Nonantum Resort in Kennebunkport, Maine.
