2012 was a tremendous and inspirational year for the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses, a non-profit chapter of the American Lighthouse Foundation. Our strong corps of volunteers, members, and supporters once again helped us achieve our seasonal goals and we continue to work on our long term endeavors. More than 30 volunteers contributed a combined total of well over 1,000 hours of volunteer time in 2012.

Here’s a summary of our accomplishments and highlights:

  • The interior metalwork and woodwork of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse was cleaned and repainted, including the 44 steps and railings, and the watch room floor, walls, ceiling, and ladder.
  • Attendance at Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse open houses topped out at just over 3,000 visitors for the season, breaking all previous records.
  • Our popular nighttime “haunted tours” sold out on the four nights they were offered!
  • A proposal was prepared for the building of a dock at Whaleback Lighthouse. We are working with a highly qualified team of experts as we work toward our goal of public access.

We love to update our supporters and document our accomplishments throughout the year on our website and Facebook page, but we strongly encourage you to come out to an event or open house in 2013 and see for yourself the wonderful work and dedication that is put forth by our volunteer corps.

Next year’s projects include:

  • Maintenance and recoating of the 80-foot wooden walkway at Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse.
  • Cleanup and prep work in the interior of Whaleback Lighthouse.
  • We are working for a full restoration of the 1903 oil house at Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse with the goal of installing permanent exhibits.
  • Fundraising for the installation of a dock at Whaleback Lighthouse.
