In the New Hampshire Seacoast Region, Joel Sherburne is widely known as the keeper of the cheese at Calef’s Country Store in Barrington, in operation since 1869. He’s also the voice heard on the store’s radio commercials. Joel has lots of other interests besides cheese, however. He recently retired from Barrington’s ambulance service, which he founded 40 years ago. He was named the state’s EMT of the year in 1981. And more than a decade ago, Joel founded New Hampshire Lighthouse Week, approved by the state legislature as the third full week of June. Each year, Joel has presented awards to individuals and organizations involved in the preservation of the local lighthouses.

This year’s award went to Gary Sredzienski, popular local musician and swimmer whose two long distance winter swims on behalf of the American Lighthouse Foundation in 2011 raised a total of $15,000. Also present for the award presentation was NH State Representative Janet Wall, who brought along a proclamation from NH Governor John Lynch designating June 17-23 as 2012 New Hampshire Lighthouse Week.

All of us Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouses extend our heartfelt thanks to Joel Sherburne, Rep. Wall, and Gary Sredzienski for all they have done to help preserve our maritime history.
